ABA Welcomes New Directors to the Board
10/26/17 – We are pleased to announce the elections of Alex Macario, M.D., M.B.A., and Margaret Pisacano, B.S.N., J.D., to our Board of Directors. Dr. Macario officially began his term as a physician director and Ms. Pisacano as a public member director following the Fall 2017 Board meeting.
Dr. Macario serves as chair of the ABA Research Committee and a member of the Maintenance of Certification, In-Training Examination and OSCE Committees. He is a professor of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine, and, by courtesy, health research and policy at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Macario also serves as vice-chair for Education and program director for the Anesthesia Residency. His research is dedicated to the economics, quality and outcomes for patients undergoing surgery and anesthesia.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Rochester, his master’s in business administration degree from University of Rochester Simon Graduate School of Business, and doctor of medicine degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Dr. Macario holds ABA certification in anesthesiology (1995) and participates in MOCA 2.0.
Dr. Macario has two adult children and lives with his wife in their home on the Stanford University Campus.
He succeeded J. Jeffrey Andrews, M.D., who will remain active with the Board as a new examiner trainer.
Ms. Pisacano serves on the ABA Credentials and Nonstandard Examinations Committees.
She is the co-supervisor for the University of Kentucky (UK) Healthcare Externship, and associate general counsel and director of Risk Management for UK HealthCare. Ms. Pisacano served as a medical malpractice trial lawyer in private practice for 18 years in Kentucky. She also worked as a nurse for nine years after graduating from the Vanderbilt School of Nursing. She earned her juris doctorate degree from University of Kentucky College of Law.
Ms. Pisacano and her husband live in Lexington, KY, and have four children between the ages of 16 and 23.
She succeeds William J. Hesson, J.D., the Board’s first public member director.
