Certification in Health Care Administration, Leadership and Management Approved
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has approved the subspecialty of Health Care Administration, Leadership and Management (HALM) for all specialties.
Health Care Administration, Education and Leadership integrates expertise from medicine, health systems science, quality improvement, patient safety, business, public health, communication, computer science, economics, law and other disciplines in a singular subspecialty certification. Certification in Health Care Administration, Leadership and Management will provide physicians the opportunity to enhance their practice and set standards in physician leadership.
The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) will serve as the administrative board; the American Boards of Anesthesiology, Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine are co-sponsoring boards. ABEM is responsible for examination development, administration, scoring and analysis. Each sponsoring board is responsible for reviewing and approving its respective candidates’ applications and notifying them of their examination results.
ABA- and other ABMS-certified physicians can achieve certification in HALM by meeting the eligibility criteria, fulfilling specific credential requirements and passing the HALM Certification Examination. The first certification exam will be offered in October 2024.
ABA board-certified physicians now have access to eight subspecialty certification opportunities.
