The ABA Announces New Physician Research Consultant
Raleigh, N.C. (July 10, 2023) – The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) announced today the appointment of John D. Mitchell, M.D., as our new Physician Research Consultant.
This newly created, part-time position will assist the ABA’s Research Committee to conceptualize, design and execute studies that advance the ABA’s research initiatives.
Dr. Mitchell will work with the Research Committee on various projects, including studies related to Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) milestones, competency-based medical education, DEI and prospective studies of novel assessment methodologies. He will work with the ABA research team to identify and generate relevant data, direct analyses and participate in developing manuscripts for publication.
Dr. Mitchell began volunteering with the ABA as an oral examiner in 2014 and was a vital member of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Development Task Force from 2015 through 2016. He has continued his involvement with the OSCE Committee as the leader for the Interpretation of Echocardiograms station and vice chair for technical skills for the OSCE Committee. Dr. Mitchell also co-chairs a task force exploring innovative ways to better test technical skills for the OSCE, a component of the ABA’s APPLIED Examination for initial board certification.

Dr. Mitchell has extensive research experience, particularly related to informing best practices in medical education. Dr. Mitchell was the first recipient of the EAB Education Research Award from the Association of University Anesthesiology in 2022 and the Phillip Liu Award for Innovation in Anesthesia Education Research from the Society of Education in Anesthesia in 2017. He has contributed to numerous funded and unfunded projects, including multiple Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research grants.
Additionally, Dr. Mitchell served as a member of the ACGME Milestones 2.0 Creation task force and collaborated on developing the revised and enhanced Anesthesiology Milestones for the ACGME.
Dr. Mitchell is the vice chair for academic affairs in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine at Henry Ford Health in Detroit and professor and vice chair of anesthesiology at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine.
