Announcing the 2025 FAER-ABA Research in Education Grant

The FAER-ABA Research in Education Grant (REG), co-sponsored by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), returns as part of FAER’s Spring 2025 Grant Cycle. The FAER-ABA REG advances the careers and knowledge of physician-anesthesiologists interested in key elements of education in anesthesiology.

Constituting $100,000 in funding over a two-year period, the FAER-ABA REG is available to faculty of any rank. The grant requires that 40% of the faculty member’s time be dedicated to the proposed research. Only board-certified physician-anesthesiologists who will not be actively pursuing additional ABA certifications during the grant period will be eligible to apply. University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan) – Is Participation in Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Associated with Clinical Outcomes?

Those interested in applying for the 2025 FAER ABA-REG need to submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) prior to submitting a full application. The submission window for FAER-ABA REG LOIs will be open through Dec. 31, 2024.

After an initial review, selected applicants are invited to submit full research proposals. Priorities will be given to proposals that evaluate the following elements of ABA board certification through the lens of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

• The value of initial certification and the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology program (MOCA) to clinicians and the public
• The validity and impact of the ABA’s initial certification program – the staged examination system (BASIC, ADVANCED, and APPLIED Examinations)

We also encourage projects that address knowledge gaps as identified by initial certification or MOCA, novel methods of teaching or assessment, or issues related to the excellence of the workforce and/or workforce needs, development or quality.

Applicants selected to submit a full proposal will be notified in January 2025.

The ABA provides the grant recipient with mentoring and access to ABA resources, which may include de-identified physician data, data analysis expertise and other tools necessary to design, conduct and report the project. The grantee may also pursue primary data collection based on their research question.
