Setting standards and leading innovation for the practice of anesthesiology since 1938
Raleigh, N.C. (Feb. 19, 2025) – We are pleased to announce the election of Jiapeng Huang, M.D., Ph.D., to the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) Board of Directors (BOD). Dr. Huang will officially begin his term as diplomate director following the Fall 2025 BOD Meeting on Oct. 19.
Dr. Huang is a tenured professor and vice chairman of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at the University of Louisville (UofL), Louisville, KY, where he leads clinical and translational research. He serves as the chief scientific officer for UofL Health and is the associate dean for clinical research at the UofL School of Medicine. Dr. Huang also serves as deputy director for the Louisville Clinical and Translational Research Center, funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Huang to the ABA Board of Directors,” says ABA Secretary John E. Fiadjoe, M.D. “Dr. Huang’s service as an ABA examiner, pioneering work in AI-driven clinical research and commitment to advancing patient safety will be a tremendous asset as the ABA begins to implement its strategic plan. Welcome, Dr. Huang!”
Dr. Huang has played an integral role in helping advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology as an ABA volunteer. He has served as an examiner for the APPLIED Exam since 2015. Dr. Huang is also a member of the Standardized Oral Exam Committee and a question author for the Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology Exam.
“Becoming a member of the ABA Board of Directors allows me to serve my specialty and help maintain the highest standard of anesthesiology in the United States,” says Dr. Huang. “Board certification affirms my commitment to my patients as I provide the best care with my knowledge and skills, as examined by the ABA.”
His research focuses on using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning tools to innovate and improve clinical outcomes. Funded by the American Heart Association, his team is leading efforts in using explainable AI, confidence level calculation on predictions and Markov Decision Process models to provide real-time clinical decision support to reduce cardiac surgery associated acute kidney injury.
Dr. Huang will succeed Thomas M. McLoughlin Jr., M.D., who will complete his BOD tenure in the fall of 2025.
