Since 1993, the ABA has offered certification in pain medicine (PM), a multidisciplinary subspecialty concerned with the caring for patients experiencing significant pain.
Although the care of patients is heavily influenced by the primary specialty of physicians who subspecialize in pain medicine, each member of the pain treatment team understands the basic principles of pain medicine, the anatomical and physiological basis of pain perception and the psychological factors that modify the pain experience.
