Exceptional Clinician Pathway

A path to certification for outstanding internationally trained and certified anesthesiologists

How this works

The Exceptional Clinician Pathway allows internationally trained and certified anesthesiologists practicing in the United States who have proven excellence in clinical care a path to attain ABA board certification. AEP program participants must successfully pass all ABA certification exams to achieve certification.

This pathway aims to enhance the quality of patient care, and help address the growing need for more anesthesiologists, by acknowledging the achievements of exceptional clinicians and providing them with a path to board certification. Documented achievement in clinical excellence in the United States, rather than the potential for future success, is required for acceptance into the AEP program.

Program participants will spend four years in an academic anesthesiology training program and are expected to actively engage in departmental education activities throughout the duration of the program. AEP participants will be periodically evaluated through various methods, including assessments by department chairs and annual In-Training Exams (ITEs) administered by the ABA.

Documented achievement in clinical practice in the United States requires:

  1. Recognition by peers and learners as an excellent clinician (evaluations, invitations to teach at conferences, authorship of guidelines and practice parameters).
  2. The expectation for faculty concentrating on this area of focus is superb performance as clinicians or public health practitioners to improve patient care.
  3. Documented participation in faculty development programs (e.g., leadership training, ultrasound workshops) AND application of principles of leadership and/or clinical skills from those programs (include previously attended courses and courses to which the faculty has applied).
  4. Greater than 80% of time spent taking care of patients in the clinical setting.

At the time of application, the sponsoring training program will submit a detailed four-year mentoring plan for the applicant, along with other documentation. All applications are subject to a $2,500 fee, payment for which must be mailed to our office with the mail-in form immediately following the application submission.

In the four-year mentoring plan, please address the items listed on the AEP Exceptional Clinician Checklist.
